The Grammys introduced a new category... BTS wasn't having it.
BTS have officially announced that they won't be submitting their comeback album Arirang for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. Despite it being one of the biggest contenders for the Recording Academy's brand-new ‘Best Asian Pop Music category’.
In a joint statement shared on Instagram, the group explained their decision:
"We hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language. We thank ARMY and everyone who has always stood by us."
The announcement arrives just weeks after the Recording Academy revealed the new category, which quickly became a controversial topic among fans. While some welcomed the recognition of Asian artists, others questioned whether creating region-specific awards helps celebrate global music (or simply separates it.)
The timing has also sparked comparisons to recent Grammy shake-ups.
After Beyoncé made history by winning both Album of the Year and Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter, the Academy announced that its country categories would be split into Contemporary and Traditional Country from 2027 onwards.
Earlier this year, Bad Bunny's Debí Tirar Más Fotos became the first Spanish-language album to take home Album of the Year, followed by the introduction of a new Best Latin Song category for next year's ceremony.
For BTS, the Grammys have been a long-running chapter. The group has earned five Grammy nominations, performed on the awards stage three times, and delivered the record-breaking "Butter" performance, which remains the most-watched Grammy performance on YouTube.
Yet despite their global success, a Grammy win has continued to elude them, which makes this latest move all the more interesting.
By choosing not to compete in a category many expected them to dominate, BTS have shifted the conversation away from trophies and back to the music itself. This is a sentiment that reflects the message they shared with fans.
One thing's for sure: whether they're collecting awards or skipping them altogether, BTS still know how to get the whole world talking. And judging by their sold-out world tour? They'll be just fine.
