The ARMYs Were Right... I Get The BTS Hype.

BTS has been around for approximately 4,773 days... I've been an ARMY member for 6.

For the longest time, I didn't really get it - don't get me wrong, they can sing and dance and perform better than I ever could, and I could never reach the level of fame that they have, but I struggled with the grasp of an idol having so many people in a chokehold.

I knew they wereΒ theΒ biggest K-pop group in the world. I knew they were selling out stadiums, breaking records... but every time someone started rambling about them, I felt a disconnect.Β

I'd like to formally apologise.

6 days into my ARMY era:

My Recruitment

(Shoutout to My FOMO)

Last Friday, I was sat with two ARMYs and had an epiphany that I actually had absolutely nothing to contribute to the conversation. One thing about me? I LOVE to talk - so I had the worst case of conversational FOMO imaginable.Β

My peers urged me to give them a quick stalk on Instagram, and from there, a new ARMY member was born.Β

My Bias

(Who's Your Bias?)

Why thanks for so kindly asking - it's currently RM, with V threatening to overtake him with his AI generated jawline (is this why his name is V?? Asking for a friend...).

RM's charisma, leadership skills and overall swaggy-ness is what put him at the top of my rankings, and V just looks incredibly meme-able despite looking like hes come straight out of a new anime series.

My Pipeline

(...I'm An Empath)

Hear me out: yes, BTS makes great music, but I don't actually think that's why people becomeΒ obsessedΒ with them.

Plenty of artists make great music, and very few build the kind of emotional connection BTS have with their fans - I fell into the rabbit hole, the more I realised people aren't just discovering songs, they've been* rooting* for their story.

This is old news - but hearing they held a free concert in America for a mere 200 people, then fast forward 12 years, and they're giving away 15,000 free tickets to a concert attended by more than 100,000 people is they type of thing to make any grown person cry (I teared up on the bus upon learning this).

So... I get it now. My hands are up, watching clips from their London performance was truly heartwarming, and I finally understood why people are so invested.Β

Will my bias change next week? Probably. Am I going to deep dive their insane digital footprint and share it with the world? Definitely.Β
