Can we just take a moment to appreciate women winning?
If you’ve been keeping up with Olivia Dean, you’ll know this moment has been a LONG time coming. Just last year, she was opening at Laneway Festival, and now she’s selling out Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium Bowl, with over 44,000 people in the crowd. What a full circle moment for her! With her coming to New Zealand, we’re so excited to see just how far she’s come.
And what makes her success even more exciting is that she hasn’t had to chase every trend or reinvent herself overnight. She’s simply stayed true to her sound, and people are finally catching on. Because sometimes, the best thing a woman can do is keep showing up as herself, and let the rest follow.
There’s just something so special about watching an artist you’ve been listening to grow in real time. With her soulful vocals and latest album, The Art of Loving, Olivia Dean is proving exactly why she deserves all the flowers coming her way (and why we can absolutely see her taking home a Grammy for Best New Artist).
We know Zara Larsson isn’t exactly new to the scene. She’s been making music for years, and let’s be real, we all know the lyrics to “I just wanna be part of your symphony…” by heart. But ever since Midnight Sun, it feels like the rest of the world has finally caught up with what her fans have known all along: Zara is THAT girl.
Remember when she was opening for Tate McRae? Now, Zara’s stepping into her own spotlight with a world tour and making her way to New Zealand for the first time (and we’re SO ready)! From her colourful, Lisa Frank-inspired aesthetic to her unapologetically herself attitude, everything feels like an extension of her personality. It’s playful, a little chaotic, nostalgic and completely authentic.
Her performances aren’t just about putting on a show; they’re about having fun, taking up space and embracing the joy of just being a girl. Because if Zara’s teaching us anything, it’s that being unapologetically yourself will never go out of style.
Now let’s talk fashion. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has always been a hit every year, but its history with representation means that every new chapter comes with a bigger conversation about who gets to be a part of it.
The inclusion of models like Ravleen Varghese, Ming Xi and Liu Wen on one of fashion’s most recognisable runways is a reminder of just how important representation is. For so long, the beauty and fashion industries have pushed a pretty narrow idea of what the “ideal” woman should look like.
So, seeing women from different backgrounds take up space on such a huge platform? It matters. Because when we see more women who look different from one another being celebrated, it challenges the idea that there’s only one way to be beautiful, and makes room for more women to see themselves in spaces they might not have before.
Whether you're entering your own main character era or just watching from the sidelines with your headphones on, take this as your reminder to hype up the women around you.
Stream their music, celebrate their wins, show up for their work and let them have their moment. And right now? There's a whole lot to cheer for 🧘♀️🪷
