Hi Beauties! 💞
When you’re just getting into skincare, it’s natural wanting to try out some of the most well-known ingredients first. After a while of using products and doing your research, you might find yourself becoming curious about more ingredients that maybe don’t receive as much hype, but always seem to be recurring. You might have heard of Allantoin because there is a high chance that it is definitely one of those ingredients!
Once you know to look for it, you’ll notice that Allantoin is subtly included in many ingredient lists. What exactly is this mysterious ingredient and what can it do for your skin? 😮 Here’s a little guide!
What is Allantoin?
Allantoin, in its organic form, is a compound that is found and extracted from certain plants like sugar beets, chamomile and wheat sprouts. It’s also known as aluminum dihydroxy allantoinate, but we’ll just call it Allantoin to keep things simple 😁 Most notably, it can be extracted from the comfrey plant, which is native to parts of Asia and Europe. In skincare, the compound that is mainly used is recreated in labs to be chemically equivalent to its natural form. This lab-created version, such as allantoin glycyrrhetinic acid, mimics the effects of natural Allantoin and has been proven to be safe enough to work in many different beauty products.
Allantoin’s core function is to be a non-toxic moisturising agent, so it’s a great ingredient to look out for if you’re in need of deep hydration or anti-aging 😌 It’s a mild keratolytic, which means that it has the ability to increase the water content within cells and also helps to shed the outer layers of skin (desquamation). Along with these major factors, Allantoin also has tons of other bonuses!
What are the benefits?
As mentioned, it’s an amazing ingredient for moisturising the skin and making sure that hydration is retained 💦 As a keratolytic, it’s also a light exfoliant that removes dead skin and helps to smooth out the texture of your skin. In turn, this exfoliation process also helps to brighten and even out the skin tone. On top of this, it’s also got soothing and wound-healing properties as well! ✨
If you’re after a multi-purpose all-rounder, I’ll say that Allantoin is a strong candidate! However, as it has exfoliating properties, Allantoin should be avoided for everyday use in high amounts. It should also be used in precaution with other exfoliating ingredients in order to avoid irritation and sensitivity caused by over-exfoliation.
This product contains 50% Collagen, a very high percentage to apply topically on the skin. Collagen is known to improve elasticity and suppleness to the skin, providing effective anti-aging benefits to the skin. Its thicker texture, paired with Allantoin, Hyaluronic Acid, Birch Sap Juice and Trehalose makes it a very moisturising formula!
This toner contains 74 kinds of skin-nourishing natural minerals from the deep seawater of Ulleungdo, Korea. It works with Allantoin, Panthenol and Betaine to soothe and hydrate the skin. Formulated with only mild ingredients, it is a lightweight and watery everyday toner that is ideal for sensitive skin.
Combining the power of Carrot Seed Oil and Cica, this toner pad is the perfect formula for soothing and calming, particularly for acne-prone skin. Water retaining goodies like Panthenol and Allantoin are included to hydrate and strengthen the skin barrier to protect against harmful external factors.
