Antioxidants for Youthful, Glowy skin ๐Ÿ’ซโœจ

by Lina Seah

Hi Beauties! ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒธ

Today I have a very interesting topic to share with you all about something you may already be incorporating into your skincare routine but are unaware of: ANTIOXIDANTS ๐Ÿƒ

Antioxidants is a term that covers a range of ingredients found in skincare, so I will be breaking down what exactly antioxidants are and how important they are in achieving healthy, glowy skin.

For those who already use antioxidants, this may be a very enlightening guide on what role they play for your skin and if you have yet to incorporate antioxidants into your routine, I hope this post will encourage you to do so! There is no excuse not to continue to do the best for our skin as you never know how many stressors there are in our environment.

What are free radicals?

To understand the benefits of antioxidants, itโ€™s important to address what they target first. Free radicals occur when the molecules in our skin lose electrons, making them unstable. This is known as oxidative stress and our skin goes through it every day. You may have heard of oxidation in Vitamin C serums where the product turns yellow and becomes unfit for use โ€“ it is essentially the same but in regard to our skin. In order to return back to a stable state, molecules search for and โ€œstealโ€ electrons from other healthy cells in our skin which can cause skin issues like cell damage and breakouts. Lack of sleep๐Ÿ’ค, stress ๐Ÿ˜– and pollution ๐Ÿ’จ are a few of many factors that cause oxidative stress.

How do antioxidants help?

Antioxidants help neutralise these unstable molecules by providing the unstable molecules with electrons without turning into a free radical themselves. This stops the chain of free radical formation.

Antioxidants occur naturally in our bodies, but its production slows with age. The food we eat delivers antioxidants to our organs and internal cells, so why should our skin be deprived of antioxidant benefits too? ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฑ

As mentioned earlier, antioxidants come in many forms and serve different purposes. Here are some honorary mentions:

  • Green tea extract soothes the skin with anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Niacinamide brightens and is non-sensitising, perfect for all skin types.
  • Vitamin C also brightens and targets hyperpigmentation.
  • Vitamin E promotes cell function, heals UV damage and is anti-aging.
  • Yeast extract improves skin texture and brightens and lifts the skin.ย
