Cost of Closet Crisis: Surviving the Fashion Recession

Cannes BANNED sheer dresses, TikTok mourns the mini skirt, and your favourite it-girl’s wardrobe? Beige. Is this a closet crisis, or a much needed era?
Turns out, the cost of living crisis is something even girl math can’t solve. Fashion recission? Not just a term you throw around - it’s actually a thing. Whether you sensed it in the air or felt it in your wallet, rise in prices and tighter budgets have changed the way we shop, dress and show up to events.
Change is scary, but just because it says “recession” doesn’t mean it’s the death of fashion! It might just be the reset we’ve needed - let’s change the angle.
It’s a sign of the times:
Not really a red or a green flag, more… beige. We’ve seen it and we’re not exactly complaining (it’s hard economic times after all). With the cost of living crisis and all that jazz, we’ve started eyeing up the perfect white tee, plain tailored blazer and everyday jeans that fits just right.
Quiet luxury and old money aesthetic is a fun way of convincing ourselves we’re thriving - even when our bank accounts are on their last nerve. While it’s a collective gaslight that everything’s okay, it’s not without good intention! Fast fashion has been replaced with good quality capsule pieces and neutral tones that stand the test of time.
p.s. The OG “little black dress” was a recession era invention - proof that simplicity never goes out of style 🖤
The “Hemline Index” is real. The economy plummeted, and the length of our skirts followed - we woke up one day and decided midi and maxi skirts were the way to go. Sources say short skirts indicate people are more carefree and less concerned… not sure if they’ve worn a mini skirt before but I feel more comfy and carefree in my maxi skirt.
After years of trend overload, this feels kind of like a fashion exhale; flowy shapes, soft silhouettes and pieces that are practical for both running your errands and your night out. The shift to more modest attire extends beyond skirts - you’re more likely than not to see a blazer or simple singlet at the clubs than ever before.
p.s. Cannes Festival tried (and failed) to ban sheer dresses and voluminous dresses for “decency” reasons… while we sort of get it - isn’t it 2025?
The resurgence of twins “recession blonde” and “recession brunette” have arrived, and it's giving carefree, effortlessly chic. Hair appointments cost an arm and a leg at the moment, and stretching out those salon visits and bringing those natural roots out is in right now.
It’s all about looking polished without looking like you tried too hard - think low-maintenance routines and beauty hacks that don’t break the bank. Minimal looks inspired by K-beauty that bring out an effortless glow without all the extra makeup…and healing your dry, damaged hair - natural, authentic, and budget friendly!
The Lipstick Effect: in hard economic times, sales for small luxuries like lipstick and nail polish always spike - anything for a small mood boost!
With the 2008-era trends making a comeback, thrifting is having its moment. It’s the perfect way to join in on the fun without the risk of overspending on a piece you’ll only wear a handful of times - whether it's a blazer, vintage denim, or a one-of-a-kind statement piece for a special occasion.
The stigma around shopping secondhand has disappeared and that feeling when someone asks where you got something from and saying, “it was thrifted!” is unmatched. Half the fun is in the adventure - spend a day with a friend and sift through the racks for those hidden gems and serotonin boost.
Not sure where to start? Take a look at our favourite thrift shops you NEED to explore.
So, is this a cry for help? If this is fashion’s version of tough love - we’ll take it. Recession’s never looked better, and after all, the best things (and outfits) are made under pressure.
Love it or hate it, Beauties x
