“Hot girls have stomach issues” but let's face it - severe bloating, constipation and wind are NOT the vibe.
It’s time to stop normalising discomfort and enter our healing eras; gut health is having its moment… and for good reason. The foundation of your energy, mood and overall glow boils down to what’s going on inside you, and while all the memes and TikToks about bloating and IBS are relatable, why is it so normalised? Lets shift the narrative because hot girls DON’T SETTLE and we address the problem right from the root - no quick fixes or cutting entire food groups (we’ve all been there).
Healing through the Five Stages of Gut Grief:
Lets be real - feeling like you’re six months pregnant after every meal isn't normal. Your gut does so much more than just digest food (and bloat) - it’s central to your energy levels, your mood, immunity to sickness and your ability to girlboss through your day-to-day life.
Good gut is a non-negotiable:
🌱 Mood Regulation - 95% of serotonin is produced from your gut! Your mood swings aren’t just because your makeup isn’t sitting right.
🌱 Energy & Focus - Proper nutrient absorption = fuelled body = peak performing body and brain
🌱 Immune Support - 70% of your gut is in your immune system! When it’s thriving, you are too.
The bloating pains and discomfort aren’t just little red flags, they’re a big red carpet leading you right to the answer - accept these symptoms as a cry for help 😭.
Frustration is inevitable when your number one hater is your stomach, especially when it seems like everyone else is enjoying their cute brunches and pretty cocktails.
Nevertheless, anger never fixes anything; understanding what's going on will:
🧘🏻♀️ Tracking your symptoms - Write what you eat, how you feel after and any patterns you notice to help identify triggers without jumping to conclusions
🧘🏻♀️ Move your body - Exercise not only reduces stress hormones, but also improves digestion and bowel movement. Getting those steps in or yoga will do wonders for your mind and gut.
🧘🏻♀️ Hydrate - Water helps break down food and supports nutrient absorption - have a glass after this read.
This is a canon event, and I’m going to interfere. No matter how tempting it is to believe that a gluten-free, dairy-free, joy-free meal might be the solution to all your problems, cutting out entire food groups isn't always the answer unless medically necessary. In fact, IBS and stomach issues might be a sign you’re not getting enough of the good stuff for your digestion.
Instead of band-aid fixes:
❤️🩹 Focus on Diet Diversity - Get those colours in, the more the better! Include fibre-rich foods like oats and leafy greens, fermented options like kimchi, and snacks like berries or dark chocolate in your routine.
❤️🩹 Pre & Probiotics - Incorporate probiotics like yogurt into your breakfast and feed the good bacteria with prebiotics like garlic and asparagus in your lunch or dinner.
In moments of helplessness remember - healing isn’t linear! I get it, stress causes digestive issues and digestive issues cause stress… it’s a vicious cycle that feels impossible to break, but there are ways to relieve your pain so you can still enjoy yourself while working towards long-term healing.
Tips for relief:
🍵 Tea is your BFF - peppermint and green tea are personal favourites! Sipping on these helps relax your digestive muscles and reduce bloating too.
🍵 Stretching - Gentle stretches like child’s pose and twists promote digestion (I’d recommend doing these in the comfort of your room… 🌬️).
🍵 Mindfulness - Manage stress and make time for yourself, whether it's journaling, meditation or a new hobby. Your nervous system plays a larger role than you think.
Acceptance isn’t about giving up - it’s about taking control. Once you start understanding your body’s needs and communicating with it through mindful choices, your healing era begins!
🌅 Stay consistent with the small changes in your lifestyle - eat diverse whole foods, stay hydrated, manage stress, move your body, and prioritise your sleep.
🩺 If symptoms don’t seem to look up despite your efforts, take it as your sign to check in with your doctor. Sometimes deeper concerns or hormonal imbalances need to be addressed, and that's okay! Healing is a journey, not a destination.
Your gut health journey is about progress - not perfection. While it’s great to see awareness growing online, let's not normalise discomfort and instead, tackle the issue together. Healing is all about balance, baby steps, and learning how your body responds. Prioritising long-term health and making mindful changes is in - because when your gut thrives, so do you.
