The evolution of mindful wellness has turned dark and dystopian… why are people turning themselves into lab experiments?
Peptides are everywhere. It’s naturally occurring in your food, your skincare, even your favourite lip tints. But lately, a different method of consumption has been circulating (and trending) on the worldwide web in an entirely different way - through syringes, comment sections and “biohacking” routines.
It brings to question: when did health and wellness turn into DIY experiments on our bodies?
So… what's the issue?
…Then what is it? Peptides are naturally occurring and are like the building blocks of proteins like collagen (to keep your skin plump and youthful). They’re in eggs, meat, dairy, oats - and your skincare serums and creams too!
These methods are controlled, trialed, tested and safe. The problem isn’t the peptide itself; it’s what happens when we take it out of context (aka. when we listen to the influencers).
The difference? The DELIVERY.
🥗 When you eat them:
Your body breaks them down safely into amino acids as it travels through your digestive tract before it reaches your bloodstream.
💧 In skincare:
When applied topically, the product stays local and sends signals to your skin only - telling it to repair, hydrate and glow better.
Injecting peptides directly into our body? An entirely different story.
DIY injections (...first red flag) bypass your body’s natural defences and safety filters, sending substances directly into your bloodstream. If your brain isn’t already screaming ‘RED FLAG’ then I’ll help list some of many dangers:
⛳️ Contamination
⛳️ Incorrect dosing
⛳️ Immune reactions
⛳️ Hormonal disruption
And if that wasn’t already bad enough, the long-term effects are practically unknown. It’s submitting to taking a simple skincare ingredient and running experiments on yourselves in your bedroom… Weird.
The crazy part is the influence and pressure from people on social media (that we’ve never met btw) who keep pushing their preach about radical results down our throats; “I’m so toned after JUST 3 weeks,” “Here’s my before vs. after!”
It feels like we’re living in an episode of Black Mirror - Ordering peptides through comment sections on TikTok, mixing them ourselves, and injecting them at home with no medical supervision?
Why are we chasing unobtainable perfection with no thought for consequence or risk?
The result? Only time will tell. If anything, this feels like a cry for help. What happened to eating whole foods, having a balanced diet, going outside to get our daily dose of Vitamin D, drinking 2L of water, sleeping for 8 hours, and a trusty skincare routine?
Peptides = good, but only in the ways they were designed to be used. What do you think?
