HI-TIPS: Retinol Too Early for Teens?

by Michelle Li

The simple answer to this question is yes. But like any skincare topic, there comes a full list of reasons. Essentially, up until our mid-20’s, skin is much more delicate and our moisture barrier may not be fully developed. When using such a potent ingredient like Retinol, it can cause irritation and make your skin even more sensitive.

So what is the best skincare routine for teens? Well, to put it simply, it’s to keep it straightforward with just the necessities:So what is the best skincare routine for teens? Well, to put it simply, it’s to keep it straightforward with just the necessities:

Step 1: Cleanser

Cleansers come in two types - oil cleansers or water cleansers. We would recommend both as they offer two opposing benefits. Oil cleansers are the best to remove sunscreen and makeup while water cleansers remove dirt, impurities and bacteria best! Both are key to preventing acne.

To keep it simple, use a super gentle water cleanser like the Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleansing Gel in the morning. Then do a double-cleanse at night. I recently purchased the Purito Avocado Cleansing Balm and love how my skin feels so soft afterwards.

Step 2: Toner

Toners are essentially the hydrators! It’s important in K-Beauty, because they’re the prep to all the next steps. This way the skincare that you use after absorbs deeper… and we can all do with hydration; it’s fundamental to healthy and strong skin.

The Abib Heartleaf Toner is my personal favourite. I love a soothing toner to cool off, leaving my skin feeling super refreshed! Anything that helps keep your barrier strong is happy skin!

Step 3: Moisturiser

For all skin types, moisturiser is a MUST; even oily skin! Without it, skin lacks the backbone to retain hydration. This can actually weaken skin overtime, causing more acne, inflammation or dryness.

For our Beau-teens, the Dr Different Moisturisers are a great option! It’s got only the necessities to keep your skin functioning healthily. For our oily skin types, try the 113 Moisturiser and for normal to dry skin types, try 311 Moisturiser

Step 4: Sunscreen

Lastly, I can’t stress enough the importance of sunscreen! There’s no point applying these skincare steps, and then missing out on SPF-protection. UV rays are the cause of many skin troubles, so using sunscreen is the first troubleshooting step.

I’m sure we all are looking for light and breezy sunscreens that sink into the skin quickly. The Torriden BALANCEFUL Sun Cream is one of those. This sunscreen not only helps calm redness, but colour corrects too! The green tint makes this a perfect base on your no makeup days - perfect for teens!

Once your skin has adjusted, that’s when you can incorporate more steps and try out new products. Try opting for a serum or ampoule; they have a higher concentration of active ingredients, meaning whatever skin trouble you have, serums or ampoule will target quickly.

Teen’s skincare routine is as easy as 4-5 steps, keeping only the necessities in mind. Of course, with each skincare step, there comes a whole variety of ingredients. So find one that benefits your skin trouble and skin type. Hope this helped our Beau-teens out xx
