Your Guide To Sunscreen & HI-REVIEW: *NEW* Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence

Hello beauties and good-looking! 💕

We’re coming up to summer time and what better way to protect your skin and make the most of your skincare from using the most crucial step SUNSCREEN! Sunscreen is arguably the most important when it comes to skincare whether it may be western or not.

You may have a well-thought-out skincare routine and researched so much about it but excluding sun care is basically doing nothing since you’re not protecting your skin from the sun!

That is why I’ve created a comprehensive guide to Korean sunscreen for skin concerns. So that you can make the most out of your skincare routine and keep your skin soft, smooth and beautiful! (not that you aren’t xx) so here's an in-depth guide and answers to questions that are commonly asked.

 WHY is sunscreen so important?

Sunscreen is an important step to defend yourself against damaging UV radiation from the sun rays when we’re enjoying the summer sun but many people don’t know that it is important to apply sunscreen basically every day even when it is winter! It has been studied and scientifically shows that using sunscreen, staying away from direct sunlight and wearing protective clothing can prevent skin cancer from occurring, as well as short term and long term damages to the skin. The sun is usually most powerful between 10 am to 4 pm! So try your best to stay indoors or in the shade if you can, to make sure that you’re protected from those harmful UV rays.

It is crucial to wear sunscreen when going outside (even when it's cloudy), this is due to 80% of the sun’s UV rays which can still reach through the skin. You should wear sunscreen especially when you’re around sand, snow and water because they can all reflect the sun’s rays. Any spots that aren't covered by clothes should be covered with sunscreen also. I usually like to apply sunscreen before makeup and wait for about 10-15 minutes so that my foundation/BB cream doesn’t shift or look streaky when applying it if you’re not wearing makeup apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go outside. It is said often that you should reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours and especially when you’ve finished swimming or have been sweating!

What does UVA/UVB, SPF and PA ratings mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, it indicates the amount of time that your skin will be protected from UVB rays (Ultraviolet). UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn and when your skin turns red. For example: if you’re prone to being sunburn after 5 minutes without sunscreen, when you apply an SPF 15 sunscreen it will protect for 15 x five minutes of 1 hour, in theory.

It is recommended by dermatologists to choose a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30, which can block 97% of the UVB rays. Sunscreens with higher SPF will block a higher percentage but no sunscreen will be able to block 100% of the UV rays.

UVA rays (AKA long-wave light) and UVB rays are both bad for our skin but UVA accounts for approximately 95% of the UV light that reaches our skin.UVA rays tend to be more of a threat due to a higher percentage of it reaching the earth’s surfaces. They’re present all day long, year round even when it’s cloudy and the sun “isn’t out”. If you see daylight at any hour UVA rays are present and are usually more powerful between 10am-4pm.

UVA rays penetrate farther into the skin than UVB, which can destroy the key substances in your skin that gives it its firmness and elasticity.UVA rays tend to be the cause of wrinkles and is a major contributor to almost every type of skin cancer. Another difference is that UVA rays can penetrate through glass, while UVB rays don’t. Unless the window is specially treated to filter UVA radiation, your skin is being exposed to UVA rays which makes sunscreen absolutely crucial!

PA means Protection Grade of UVA rays. The more + signs following a PA indicate more protection against these rays. The PA grade is based on the PPD which stands for Persistent Pigment Darkening system which marks how long it would take the skin to tan.

WHAT IS IT?: It’s a water-based sun protector and holds a gel-cream type texture to give a soft weightless and light finish that doesn’t dry your skin! It is SPF50+ and PA++++ which guards the skin against UVA and UVB rays without feeling greasy or leaving a white cast. It contains two sunscreen filters, Ethylhexyl Triazone which absorbs the UVB rays, And also Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate which absorbs UVA rays. Both of these ingredients have been considered to be safe and reliable sunscreen filters

INGREDIENTS: Water (Aqua), Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Butylene Glycol, Dibutyl Adipate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Silica, Cetearyl Olivate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sorbitan Olivate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Sorbitan Stearate, Panthenol, Beta-Glucan, Disodium EDTA, Citrus Junos Fruit Extract, Adenosine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopherol, Allantoin, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil

Klairs & Wishtrend say that this Klairs UV essence is just like all the other Klairs products which are created with only the safest ingredients. This sunscreen is made with only 20 ingredients with no additives at all!

 A couple of the ingredients that are notable are ;

  • Niacinamide which is a brightening as well as an anti-aging ingredient.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic acid) this ingredient is very hydrating and moisturising due to its ability to bind water which also can achieve a plumping effect. Other ingredients like Butylene Glycol, Beta-Glucan and Glycerin can be hydrating as well and are known to help bind water into the skin and keep it hydrated for a longer time.
  • Sea Buckthorn Oil (Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil) which is a highly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial ingredient that contains a great number of antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, Folic acid, Carotenoids, Omega fatty acids and also Flavonoids. These components also work amazingly to help reduce wrinkle, pigmentation and also stimulates the collagen production. It is good on acne due to its ability to keep pores clean.

PACKAGING: The Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence looks just like the freshly juiced Vitamin C Drop and Vitamin E Mask which is a white and shiny holographic packaging, it looks very simple but the holographic actually adds a special touch to the packaging. The UV Essence also comes in an 80ml squeeze tube which is actually much bigger than most of the sunscreen that’s usually sold which are usually 50ml

FORMULA:  The texture is not creamy and doesn't feel entirely like a gel either. It is something that’s in between which may make you think that it will feel greasy on the skin but it actually isn’t at all! It absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves a semi-matte finish.

Once you apply the Klairs Soft Airy UV essence to your skin, it melts into a fast absorbing milky texture. It leaves no white cast at all!

SCENT: The fragrance is very subtle and isn’t strong at all. Klairs usually use citrus essential oils along with herbal oils which can create a little bit of a strange smell which doesn’t bother me too much at all as it isn't noticeable.

OVERALL: The Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence is by far the most lightweight and best sun protection I’ve ever used (currently still using). Most sun protections that are quick absorbing tend to dry out my skin or just don't feel as great, And then I

discovered Klairs sunscreen and it so hydrating but quick absorbing feelings like something similar to a lotion! I’m someone who particularly didn’t like putting on sunscreen but I just love slathering the Klairs sun protection on my skin! It definitely stands by the name “SOFT AIRY” because it isn’t heavy, sticky or greasy at all! It also doesn’t leave me looking like a ghost because there is no white cast! It sits and works really well under my makeup, I’ve had no issues with pilling underneath my foundation, BB creams and cushions.

Overall I’m absolutely in love with the Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence, my skin really likes it and so far there have been no issues with breakouts or any skin troubles. I have recommended this to many friends and also family and they also seem to really love it.

I do usually recommend it to those who have more combination oily skin but if you have dry skin apply a moisturising cream beforehand.

I definitely recommend this product if you are looking for a simple, lightweight yet moisturising but also not so rich sunscreen for a day to day use.
