K-Recipe: An Idol Chef's Viral Donburi

by Isabel Bang

Many NCT members are known to be experts at cooking, apparently cooking their own meals and late night snacks rather than getting deliveries. The group does make good use of their YouTube channel, arranging many shows including reality shows to show off these cooking skills. Out of the many YouTube series, there was one called ‘Master MOON Chef’, where the NCT’s main vocalist, Taeil, was the main cast.

An NCT member Winwin once said that he likes Taeil’s cooking the best out of all members, which proves Taeil’s master chef qualities! In this series which ran for seven episodes, Taeil is the world-famous master chef with 60-years experience(?) and the group members take turns to appear as his apprentice and the show host. Taeil prepares a recipe for each episode, the most trended recipes being the Taelgeul Taelgeul Pasta and the Tael Spam Don. There’s a LOT of messing around in the small talks between the members so don’t take anything they say seriously 😂

Many would already know about donburis, a Japanese rice dish with toppings, that are quite popular here in NZ as well. But have you tried it with Spam before? In the Western culture, Spam doesn’t have a good reputation, more known as ration food. I agree that Spam is a big thumbs down when served with bread, but it’s a gift from above when paired with rice 🍚 This is why in Eastern cultures (especially Korea,) Spam isn’t a junk food to avoid, but a great ingredient full of flavours! Cooked Spam with a steaming bowl of plain rice is a meal itself that I won’t complain about, but Taeil took this nation-loved combo to the next level.

Ingredients:

  • Steam rice (1 bowl)
  • Spam (½ can)
  • Water (3 Tbsp)
  • Soy Sauce (2 Tbsp)
  • Sugar (1 Tbsp)
  • Chilli powder (1 Tbsp)
  • Cooking Wine (1 Tbsp optional)
  • Olive Oil
  • Egg yolk (1 egg)
  • Chives

  1. Slice the Spam in thin slices
  2. Mix the sauces and stir well
  3. Put some olive oil on the pan, leave on medium heat until warmed and cook Spam.
  4. When the Spam gets golden, pour the sauce in the pan and leave on low heat for the sauce to simmer into the Spam.
  5. When the sauce is simmered enough, prepare a bowl of steamed rice and place the marinated Spam in the rice
  6. Finish with a fresh egg yolk and chopped chives sprinkled on top.

How quick was that cooking time!? This recipe will only take you about 5 mins to do, but it’ll be worth much more! The savoury marinated Spam with a spoonful of steamed white rice will be a wonderful duo for any of you who weren’t aware about the greatness of Spam yet. The egg yolk is not only there to look pretty, but adds the richness that softens the strong flavours of the Spam. When you can’t be bothered cooking but still want a good filling meal, pull out a can of Spam for this Spam Donburi, and watch Taeil’s recipe video for a laugh as well.
