K-Recipe: A Toast for Reminiscing the Streets of Korea 🍞

by Rebecca Kim

If you’ve ever been to Korea, you’ll know that the street food there is truly something else 🤤 If you could see me in aerial shot view on the day that I can finally set foot there again, all that you’ll see will be a blur of me zig-zagging from cart to cart 🏃‍♀️ From the classic tteokbokki and fish cake combo to crispy korean pancakes and cheesy corn dogs… I can’t tell if that’s the sound of my dog growling or my stomach 😅

“Street toast”, or “Gilgeori toast” (길거리 토스트), is one of those street foods that are highly nostalgic to people who grew up in Korea. Since it includes a combination of bread, egg and vegetables, it’s considered to be filling and nutritious (you can think of it as an upgraded omlette!) 🥚 Because of this, a lot of people would munch on it as their breakfast on the way to school or work. Since many of us can’t be in Korea to try them directly from the street vendors right now, the next best thing is to make it for ourselves at home. Luckily, it’s really simple and easy to make! 🍞

Ingredients:

  • Bread (4 slices)
  • Eggs (2)
  • Cabbage, thinly sliced (30g)
  • Carrot, cut into long thin strips (15g)
  • Onion, thinly sliced (5g)
  • Sliced cheese (2 slices, optional)
  • Sliced ham (2 slices, optional)
  • Tomato sauce/ketchup
  • Salt (½ Tsp)
  • Black pepper, ground (Âź Tsp)
  • Sugar (3 Tsp)
  • Butter, room temperature (5 Tbsp)
  • Cooking oil (optional)
  • Mayonnaise (optional)
  •

    1) Mix all of your vegetables in a bowl together, making sure that none of the pieces are too big. 2) Crack the eggs into the bowl and sprinkle the salt and pepper. Mix them all together with something that doesn’t have holes like a whisk - chopsticks are a good option for a more authentic experience 😂 3) Butter your bread for extra crispiness and taste. 4) Grease your frying pan with butter or cooking oil, then begin frying the egg mixture. Try to make it into a square shape, then split into two so that it fits perfectly into the bread. 4) If you have ham, fry the slices after removing your egg and toast the bread slices in the pan on low-medium heat. 5) Now that everything’s off the pan, sprinkle some sugar on your bread. Place the egg (sprinking a little bit more sugar if you’d like), ham and cheese on top. Squeeze some tomato sauce and mayonnaise evenly before finally placing another bread slice on the top to complete your Street Toast! (Recipe from YouTube: Seonkyeong Longest)

The savoury taste is balanced perfectly with the sweetness ⚖️ The classic way to get the sweetness is from the sugar, but many vendors these days create their own special sauces to go with it. This recipe is done the classic way with sugar, but feel free to substitute it for anything else that you’d like! It’s a customisable recipe that you can also change up with the omelette part of this toast to include your favourite vegetables, or just whatever’s in the fridge 🥕🥬🍅

Try this recipe for breakfast or lunch for a guaranteed GOOD start to your day! 🍳
