What's Hyperpigmentation & How You Treat Them

by Michelle Li

It’s the perfect time for us to bask in the sun outdoors and enjoy the warm noon that the last weeks of autumn has to offer. But the sun causes harm to our skin in many ways, one of them being hyperpigmentation. Out of the many questions that we get from our Beauties, one of the top ones is the topic of hyperpigmentation and how to get rid of it. Hyperpigmentation can be quite stubborn to get rid of and it takes a lot of patience, however, there are ways to decrease it and even better there are also things we can do to prevent it from happening in the first place.

The colour of our skin tone is formed by melanin which is made up of skin cells. When these skin cells are unhealthy and damaged, they can produce too much melanin meaning it clumps up. This causes certain areas of our skin to appear darker, thus hyperpigmentation is formed. There are many different types of hyperpigmentation due to the various ways that result in it. It is important to understand what type of hyperpigmentation you have in order to find the most suitable ways to brighten it up.

Age Spots

Age spots result from years of prolonged sun exposure and can start to occur in the late thirties or early forties. Not only does melanin form the colour of the skin, but it also protects the skin from the sun’s UV rays. Over time, especially once the skin has had years of sun exposure, the skin cells become damaged, and thus, melanin is more likely to be produced in high concentrations or be clumped together, thus resulting in age spots.

This By Wishtrend Pure Vitamin C 21.5% Advanced Serum’s main ingredient is vitamin C which is great to brighten up the skin and decrease hyperpigmentation. It’s effective in doing so because it is considered an antioxidant. This means it reduces the oxidation process to prevent melanin from forming in the first place. Not only is it a must-have product to prevent age spots from forming  but vitamin C has the ability to brighten up the skin to decrease the appearance of age spots as well.

Similar to age spots, freckles also are formed due to sun exposure however, many people experience freckles forming as early as two to three years of age. This type of hyperpigmentation is formed early on and it is largely due to genetics. Because people with freckles tend to be more sensitive to the sun, we highly recommend preventing freckles from forming in the first place through protecting the skin from UV rays through the use of sunscreen in addition to treating the hyperpigmentation.

This lightweight sunscreen that is Neogen Day-Light Protection Airy Sunscreen, has a high broad spectrum of SPF 50+ that covers both UVA and UVB rays to ensure that the skin is well protected from the sun. It contains 20 types of plant extracts to not only provide antioxidant care but help to soothe the skin which is important especially if your skin is sensitive to the sun. These plant extracts help to strengthen the skin barrier to limit sun damage all while protecting the skin from the sun.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is often associated with acne. Once a pimple heals, a dark spot may be left behind as the creation of melanin increases as a response to the breakout due to the damage it has caused. This form of hyperpigmentation can also get darker if the breakout has been picked at. UV rays are another cause to how PIH can darken over time due to its ability to cause melanin to increase and clump up.

The Some by Mi Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Serum’s main ingredient is black snail mucin. Black snail mucin works great for acne-prone skin types with deep acne scars or dark hyperpigmentation as it’s able to regenerate and heal skin cells more effectively. This helps with the damaged skin barriers to prevent PIH from occurring. Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, black snail mucin is also great in preventing breakouts from forming.

Hyperpigmentation can be stubborn to take care of so patience is key as there are certainly ways to brighten them over time. What’s more important is taking measures to prevent them from forming to help us achieve the bright and glowy skin that we all wish for. With summer here, one thing for sure and that is to load up with sunscreen and re-applying throughout the day is a must. We hope that everyone is staying safe and protected this summer!

Thanks for reading.

Until next time, bye Beauties 🐰💕
